Bit of a shock email for me, as WiFi was the key reason for linking up with OnStar. Looks like I'll have to find another way for in car wifi ...

So the email went...

In August 2017, Groupe PSA bought the Opel and Vauxhall car brands from General Motors. OnStar Europe Limited was not part of this purchase and continues to be a subsidiary of General Motors.

So, as a result of this change of ownership, OnStar services and Wi-Fi services enabled by the OnStar connection (if available in your country) will cease to be available for Vauxhall cars on 31st December 2020.

We understand you might be concerned that this will affect your OnStar service, but if you have a paid subscription OnStar will continue to give you the same exceptional service and peace of mind right up until that date.

What happens next?

You'll still be able to enjoy all of the features of OnStar right up until the moment your trial finishes. After that, you can upgrade to an OnStar subscription which gives you all of our services that keep you and your loved ones safe, including:

• Automatic Crash Response*
• 24/7 Access to our trained Advisors that speak the same language as you
• On demand Vehicle Diagnostics
• Stolen Vehicle Assistance

If you have any questions about your trial, or if you just want to know a bit more, we've put together a Customer Questions & Answers page here.

We'll be in touch as soon as we have further updates for you.

Sincerely, Brian McCreavy
Managing Director, OnStar Europe

That is not very good news. On star has been advertised heavily by Vauxhall as a major feature of their cars. This maybe another nail in the coffin of the Vauxhall brand unless they can either come to some agreement with on-star or develop their own system. This announcement certainly makes me consider how long I keep my Grandland. I'm hoping to retire in 2020 so may look around for a new car then.

Luckily my PCP ends around that time so at worst I may be without WiFi for a couple of months. In consideration of choosing another car though ... I'd be looking for on board WiFi.... so that rules out VX now for sure.

This announcement also explains why you can now choose to remove On-Star from the on line custom build web page!!

As I understand, by 2020 it is the intention of the EU that all cars sold will have some sort of eCalling (similar to Onstar). I expect that PSA will introduce some new service by then.

I heard that Vodafone offer a connection for when that's all gone, but I can not remember where I read that!

Hi I am new to this site, I have a sport nav on order to be delivered 28.12 and I have just seen online that the on star will end in 2020. Will I be able to find other WiFi for my car? It's one of the factors I used in choosing the car.

Personally I'm thinking someone will pick up where they leave off... watch that space, there's still time to go.

Hi all. I too was really angry when i heard about the end of OnStar. I did contact Vauxhall over this matter, who explained to me about them selling part of the company, but not the OnStar. I expressed my annoyance at this, and stated that at no time during my negotiations to buy a new Grandland, was i told about this. Apparantly, i cannot put in a formal complaint until OnStar has actually ceased. All new vauxhall vehicles are apparantly going to be fitted with a new system. Lets all hope that some other business picks up when OnStar has finished and offers all us Grandland OnStar owners the chance the continue to use this great system.
