petrol fuel cap doesn't tighten

Not sure if this is normal behaviour or a fault. I went to full up the Grandland for the first time on the weekend. I noticed the petrol cap didn't unscrew as on previous cars but kept turning. I did though manage to remove it once it was aligned in a certain position. On replacing the cap I aligned the two prongs and turned it slowly clockwise. It seemed to tighten quite quickly but then loosened again, such that I could remove it. In the end I had to carefully tighten it but not too far to ensure it didn't release. The car is a year old, could it be a problem with the cap or is this action normal? My previous astra would screw in a few turns before clicking if tightened further.

Mine turns a quarter turn anti-clockwise to undo and a quarter turn clockwise to lock.

Thanks for the reply. Does yours tighten and click? mine is also quarter turn to tighten but you have to be very gentle tightening it as it easily releases if you turn it too far.

I have checked mine, and it is a very positive quarter turn anti-c and it pops out, quarter turn clockwise and its tight, no click but no tendency to over do either. It sounds like yours is broken I'm afraid.

Thanks, I'll find out if it's covered under warranty else buy a new cap. Hopefully it's the cap and not the filler neck.

I will get it checked when the service is due, which will in a few months. I have got use to gently tightening it until I feel resistance, but it’s not ideal. Will also ask to have the suspension and under covers checked as I would have expected the suspension to be quieter over broken surfaces. It has a hard sounding rattle as if something plastic or hard was hitting against a stop. Though it may have been the flex floor or spare wheel tools but removed those to no avail.

Hi,
Did you get a resolution to this issue in the end? I am having similar issues with my fuel cap.

I visited the dealer and they said it needed replacing, so to request it when I take it in for servicing which will be in the next month or so. It’s not really giving me any problems though as I’m used to tightening it carefully and know when to stop, but hoping they replace it under warranty.
